Nike SB Blazer Low GT Medicom

A statement follow-up on the Japanese toy company’s monochrome Dunk Low OG sneaker triage from earlier this year, infamous Medicom Toy joins forces once more with Nike SB to bring a sense of animalistic artistry to team-rider Grant Taylor’s iconic Blazer Low GT profile. Inspired by their hefty rosta of signature collectible BE@RBRICK figurines and by founder Tatsuhiko Akashi’s unfathomable appreciation for abstract and often out-the-box aesthetics, these latest low-profile sneakers supply a light-hearted twist on a GT classic without straying from the Blazer’s undying commitment to character and its courtside-orientated ode to performance.

Founded in 1996 and home to a fruitful relationship with Nike that stems back to the early ‘00s, with iconic cross-party silhouettes such as the 2017 Dunk Elite, the Dunk High Elite QS and the silk-covered AF1’s from the highly anticipated CLOT x Medicom Toy x Nike release from 2020 helping to amount to nearly two decades worth of commemorative collaborations, Nike SB and Akashi’s Medicom Toy continues to strike the perfect balance between innovative function and inspirational aesthetic yet again. Finding themselves continually well-rooted to their BE@RBRICK mascots with affectionate references and literal nods to the collectible’s time-honoured appeal, Medicom Toy is a brand that encapsulates memorabilia, nostalgia and a refined sense of collectable character via its playful yet unguarded vibe.

Considered a follow-up on 2011’s faux pony-hair Be@rbrick x Nike Sportswear Air Force 1 Low Premium, this animal-like Blazer GT Low enhancement arrives as Medicom Toy’s first ever re-work of the iconic Blazer Low profile. Honouring the same shaggy-hair aesthetic as its earlier Dunk Low OG predecessor, these heritage basketball sneakers are styled in a classic shade of ivory-white, whilst its all-over ‘hairy cow leather’ textural trim pokes active reference at the toy-maker’s repertoire of BE@RBRICK figurines. Nike’s pre-installed Zoom Air unit keeps the profile light and well-suited to impact-ridden lifestyles, while the fully-vulcanised crisp-white rubber outsole is set with auxetic overlays for increased abrasion resistance as and where it’s needed. A classic gum-rubber sole remains faithful to the Nike Blazer’s original mark-up, with US skater Grant Taylor’s iconic star-shape sidewall perforations ensuring premium-grade circulatory comfort to suit even the most demanding of settings. Interchangeable flat-cotton laces complement the textured silhouette to secure the Medicom Toy branded padded tongue across the natural arch of the foot, while the hairy swoop-back Swooshes supply the profile with a coarse yet concealed spin on the legendary marking. Each exterior-facing sidewall is complemented by BE@RBRICK-branded embroidered stamp-style emblems, while the custom insoles pair neatly with the shaggy all-black ‘Nike’ embroidered ankle collars for a sleek twin-tone sign off that honours the design’s streamlined yet characterised appeal.

Rounding off the year alongside collaborations from the likes of Sean Cliver and independent skate-shops such as UAE’s Frame and the legendary Concepts skate-store, ‘cult-declared’ Medicom Toy continues to honour its ‘coveted collectible’ repository with yet another objectival design inspired by mainstream pop-culture and Beavertown Nike SB’s revolutionary approach to skate specific necessity and unrestrained high-profile temperaments.
