Following on from the terrain trekking inspired Nike SB Dunk Low Pro ACG Caldera and the handycam referencing ‘VX1000’ Dunk Low Pro from February, 2021’s Nike SB Dunk = roster welcomes yet another addition in the form of the Nike SB Dunk Low Pro 'Papa Bear'. Also dubbed the ‘Reverse Papa Bear’ or the ‘Pelle Hat’ colourway, this release turns its attention not only to the archival ‘Three Bears’ pack from ‘06, but to the childhood wardrobe favourites of the legendary Steve Pelletier, a former Nike SB senior product line manager and mastermind behind iconic sneaker staples such as the Ben & Jerry’s ‘Chunky Dunky’ and the trippy trimmed Nike SB x Grateful Dead Dunk Low Pro.

Despite its obvious odes to the hot-house toned ‘Papa Bear’ Dunk Highs from 2006, a fluffy furred feature from the triptych Goldilocks themed release that also hosted a ‘Baby Bear’ Dunk Low and a maternal ‘Mama Bear’ Dunk Mid, the reversed Nike SB Dunk Low Pro 'Papa Bear' is inspired by courtside tradition, creative character and a distinct sense of throwback nostalgia. Also assigned a ‘Pelle Hat’ moniker, this rehashed basketball favourite pays tribute to a certain Air Jordan cap keepsake of Steve Pelletier since the 7th grade; a wardrobe essential that has continued to solidify the Jumpman’s legacy since his early day affiliation with Nike in 1984. Greatly influenced by the caps noted ‘80s vibe, its colour blocked composure and its obvious ties to NBA heritage, this latest release pairs personified preference with Nike SB’s admiration for lighthearted innovation. Although no longer working for Nike after an influential 13 year reign, Pelletier’s ‘make cool shit and have a little fun with it’ motto continues to resonate across the Dunk’s more recent conceptualised aesthetic, with both the Nike SB Dunk ‘Pink Pig’ and Nike SB Dunk ‘Gulf’ marked with his signature design style and ultimately influenced by his own personal admiration for classic cars and his own 1986 Carrera 3.2.

Styled in colourway coined as ‘wheat fusion’ thanks to its reversed take on the ‘06 Nike SB Dunk High and Pelletier’s two toned Air Jordan 23 cap, these low collared Dunk’s feature resilient leather and brushed back suede uppers styled in referential shades of both washed wheat and dark purple for added textural depth. Fusion red interchangeable and puffy laces are mirrored by tonal embroidered side wall Swooshes to aid in the elevation of the design, whilst iconic courtside aesthetics are retained through both the perforated toe box and the circular tread detailed two tone vulcanised cupsole beneath. Striking the perfect balance between functionality and ideational aesthetic, these quad toned Dunk Low Pros are signed off with the classic ‘Nike SB Dunk Low Pro’ embroidered padded tongue, custom insoles atop the Zoom Air unit integrated sockliner and with traditional ‘Nike’ embroidered detailing across the rear heel collar that’s in keeping with the Dunk’s iconic blueprint.

A silhouette that comes full circle to not only commemorate one of the brand’s most iconic packs but also the intricacies of the masterminds behind each design, the Nike SB Dunk Low Pro ‘Papa Bear’ makes its way back to the limelight in an all new construction that switches fairytale influence for childhood aspiration and an ode to pride-of-place memorabilia.
