Nike SB Orange Label 'VX1000' Dunk Low Pro
Inspired by the solidly-built ‘Digital Handycam’ that’s continued to capture the undeterred attention of infamous skate cinematographers and the fine-lined short-forms of some of the most renowned skateboarding institutions to date, Nike SB’s latest Orange Label ‘VX1000’ Dunk Low Pro hits pause and rewind to celebrate an iconic skate-scene classic. Winding its way into 2021’s already memorable rosta of Dunks, these DCR-VX1000 inspired sneakers capture the very essence of street skating and Nike SB’s evolutionary transition into the sport itself.
Wrapping a courtside classic in a conceptional exterior inspired by a tech king-pin that has effectively boosted skate culture since its release by Sony in 1995, the Nike SB Orange Label ‘VX1000’ Dunk Low Pro pairs legacy with lens-inspired aesthetics for a truly unique drop. The go-to camera of choice for videographers such as Nike SB and Blueprint industry-guy Colin Kennedy, ‘Filmbot Files’ co-creator Mike Stanfield and Thrasher master lens-man Ewan Bowman, as well as an influential icon for brands such as Magenta and San-Francisco’s aptly titled GX1000, the VX1000’s wide-angle fisheye lens, warm colourings and undoubted ability to capture the raw sounds of grinds and the rolling thunder of urethane, is what has continued to appeal to skaters and filmers across all corners of the globe. Not Nike’s first take on a tech-led remastering, the VX1 and VX3 Hi-8 inspired VX1000 themed skate shoes host striking similarity to the highly illusive Nike SB x Travis Scott Playstation Dunk Low’s from late last year and 2015’s Nike SB x Atlas Dunk Low Premium ‘Wolf Grey’ that were effectively inspired by monochrome snapshots captured by notable skate photographers Mark White and Joe Brook and released via a collaborative and reflectively titled ‘35mm’ pack.
A detailed lace-up replication of its hand-held or shoulder-mounted muse, the tumbled-leather and brushed-suede VX1000 Dunk Low Pro is designed with the camcorder’s reputation for endurance, lightweight usability and scuff-resistant functionality in mind. Keeping its hardwood lineage in check through the continuation of the profile’s grippy circular underfoot tread and revolutionary cupsole construction, these like-for-like tech inspired shoes keep basketball heritage in line with contemporary skate-specific necessity. Off-noir and pure-platinum coloured overlays pay homage to the camcorder’s iconic Hi-Fi stereo microphone, lens hood and illuminating cassette door, whilst the pre-installed Zoom Air unit across the sockliner and the retained toe-box perforations ensure a comfortable, cushioned and well-circulated wear regardless of setting. Creative DCR-VX1000 exclusive quirks across the quarter and rear panels pay homage to the famous camcorder, with debossed white-print ‘SHUTTER SPEED’ , ‘WHT BAL’, ‘REC LEVEL’ and ‘PEAK’ decals designed with reference to the MiniDV’s rear-facing interface. Five recessed eyelets help secure the puffy all-black laces across the padded ‘Nike SB Dunk Low Pro’ branded tongue, whilst the bright orange and yellow upper eyelets are styled with reference to the audio input/output concealments across the camera’s right-side. Debossed ‘Control’ rocker-style details complement the ‘Player’ mode nubuck swoop-back Swooshes to honour the camcorder’s function-focused user interface, whilst the printed ‘0:00:01’ printed insoles allude to the start of the recording process as a whole. Black-stitch embroidered ‘Nike’ ankle collars are styled with teal-toned undertones for a streamlined sign-off that pulls creative influence from the infamous VX1000’s black-and-teal printed buttons.
Arriving as part of Nike SB’s #supportyourlocalskateshop Orange Label initiative, these conceptual sneakers strike right at the core of evolutionary skate culture. A tribute to technology, community led skate start-ups and DIY home-shot aesthetics, the Nike SB VX1000 Dunk honours the collection’s universal appeal down to a T, whilst the design’s like-for-like mastering addresses both Nike SB and the 3CCD camcorder’s superior quality and commitment to purpose without hesitation.
