Inspired by similar NYC artist collaborations such as the 2003 Dunk Low and Dunk High designed by Eric Haze, and by 2017’s Air Zoom Spiridon designed by Long Island graffiti artist STASH, Nike SB’s collaboration with FAUST is one that celebrates the intricacy and detail behind the artist's infamous handstyle. Standing apart from the usual street corner tags to actively engage public discourse and community resonance with his artwork, FAUST utilises his murals as a way in which to challenge how viewers perceive graffiti and street art culture as a whole. Named as one of Juxtapoz Magazine’s ‘Top 20 Graffiti Artists to Know Right Now’ with artwork found beyond NYC’s city limits in places such as Medellín, Moscow and Nike’s hometown of Beaverton, Oregon.
Designed as a tribute to the artist's best friend Sure who passed away in 2010, the Nike SB x FAUST Dunk High Pro is styled in a triple black and gold colourway for a regal twist on the revised basketball favourite. Although styled with alternating artwork, both shoes feature black leather overlays and a tonal suede base, whilst a classic perforated forefoot, rubber cupsole construction and circular tread honour the shoe’s courtside origins. The left shoe features gold stitch ‘Sure FAUST’ lateral quarter embroidery across the external profile, whilst the inner side wall is detailed with a drip-stitch Swoosh in reference to freshly tagged walls. The right shoe is styled in an all-black aesthetic with wrap-around calligraphy style ‘All That Matters’ embroidery. The Nike dunk comes with interchangeable laces, whilst each leather eyestay wing features concealed ‘Sure’ and ‘FAUST’ embroidery. Finished with printed ‘Sell Your Sole’ and ‘Sell Your Soul’ insoles, and with hidden ‘The Devil is in the Detail’ scripture printed across the underside of each cushioned Zoom Air insert.
