Nike SB x Yuto Horigome Dunk
Flatspot celebrates the arrival of Tokyo-born skater Yuto Horigome’s first Dunk Low Pro signature. A tribute to his Japanese heritage and detailed with his cross-feather insignia, this highly anticipated release pays creative reference to his ‘hometown hero’ nickname, assigned after being the first skater to win gold at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

An echo of the USA's influence on the country as a whole, skate culture in Japan has continued to evolve since the mid ‘80s when US skate brands, well-known skaters and the likes of the Bones Brigade rolled into Tokyo. Home to a number of influential skaters including Dunk collaborator Yuto Horigome, Keyaki Ike, Ryo Motohashi and Kenya Okuno, Nike SB Japan launched their Wamano (Made in Japan) edit in 2020, with follow-ups including their City Pop release, Japan Diary featuring Azusa ‘Nigo’ Adachi and Sara Hirayama, as well as their Tokyo to the World release that accompanied the brand’s official sponsorship of the Tokyo Games and their accompanying apparel capsule. Based in Shinagawa and launched in 2019, Nike SB's Tokyo Dojo continues to play a large part in Japanese skate culture, with the contemporary space offering a creative haven for artists, skaters and musicians to explore their talents.
Inspired by skate heroes such as Eric Koston, Mike Carroll, Guy Mariano and Gino Iannucci, Horigome began skating aged seven after time spent watching his dad skate the parks and plazas littered around Tokyo. With Lakai’s Fully Flared being the first skate edit he watched, Horigome’s skate style pairs a technical prowess with an ability to casually spin 540s on vert. Sponsored by the likes of Hardies Hardware and Spitfire, Horigome’s career so far has seen him turn pro in 2019 for April Skateboards, with a nomination for Thrasher’s Skater of the Year announced a year after his gold medal win at the postponed Tokyo Olympics. Horigome’s illustrious career continues to grow with wins at the SLS World Tour, X Games and Street League Skateboarding, backed also by his recent win at the 2023 Tampa Pro.
A clean and muted colourway designed with leather uppers and a brown suede heel panel, Yuto Horigome’s first ever Nike SB collaboration features a classic perforated forefoot, a full length cupsole stitch and a dark brown rubber outsole. Sage green Swooshes detail each midfoot, whilst three sets of interchangeable laces secure the padded Nike SB x Yuto Horigome tongue in place. Featuring Zoom Air heel inserts, a padded collar and cherry blossom printed insoles inspired by Tokyo’s Ōjima Komatsugawa Park, Horigome’s Nike SB Dunk is finished with embroidered Nike heel detailing and with his crossed-feather insignia displayed across both the lateral quarter and under the OG padded tongue.
Arriving as a complement to other Japanese collaborations including the Gundam Dunk High Pros from 2021, Instant Skateboards’ Quickstrike Dunk inspired by Shibuya’s ‘Hachiko’ heritage and to Kent Uyehara’s FTC Dunk Low Pro influenced by historical Sento bathhouse culture.
