focus on acknowledging the weird, the everyday and the awkward. Based in Amsterdam and launched in 2006, off the back of Janssen’s first brand Rockwell and the bi-annual Rustico the Great collections from 2004, by Parra’s explorative and post-pop graphic design style captures skate and streetwear culture through a vibrant and unfiltered lens. Assigned the nickname ‘Parra’ (short for paranoid) by Patta’s Gee Schmidt, Pieter Jannsen’s unfiltered design narrative merges iconographic reference with a deep-seated passion for celebrating all there is to admire about nonsensical design and out-the-box creativity. Notable collaborations for the Amsterdam based brand include those with the likes of Stussy, Supreme, Converse and Vans, with 2019 including the Nike SB x by Parra Dunk Low OG, 2020 including the co-designed Tokyo 2020 Olympic skate team kits and 2021 featuring the release of the Nike SB x Parra Dunk Low Pro ‘Abstract Art’. Inspired by a passion for music, art, film and community culture, by Parra’s obscure and illustrative aesthetic is reflected across their signature saturated colour palette, whilst a choice use of beaked and hybrid characters strives to celebrate genericism with text and geometric-print motifs being the overall design focus.
