Pure Platinum, Pure Platinum

As the first ever sustainably focused skate shoe to be released by Nike SB, these Janoski Flyleather Shoes retain the original appeal and performance elements of the best selling Janoski Remastered but have been crafted using an innovative Flyleather material that reflects an improved manufacturing process catered towards reducing environmental impact. Seen here in an introductory colourway of pure platinum, the Flyleather uppers are made with at least 50% recycled natural leather fibres which boasts a finish that is 40% lighter and 5x more abrasion resistance than full-grain leather. Retaining the much-loved elements of natural leather such as texture and smell, a suede-like texture is notable across the design due to the back side of the fabric having been selected to provide a smooth, comfortable finish. The colour matched flat lace up fastening helps to keep the foot in place and is also made from recycled materials with a collaborative branding label added to the perforated tongue. On either side of the foot signature Swoosh tick branding remains but has been applied using a reduced amount of zig zag stitch lines. Throughout the inside of the shoe the foam sockliner holds a Zoom Air unit to ensure responsive cushioning with a decorative two-tone surface pattern for extra character. For the first time in Nike SB history the tape between the midsole and upper is made using a Nike Grind material with a speckled finish that draws attention to the fact that it is constructed from surplus manufacturing materials and athletic footwear. Ensuring a broken-in feel from unboxing, the rubber outsole has been thinned out in key areas.

Born through a desire to reduce the environmental footprint associated with leather manufacturing whilst retaining the much-loved look, feel, natural durability and even smell of the material, Flyleather has already been used for a selection of Nike’s best loved classic footwear models such as the ‘70s Cortez and Air Force 1, but this Janoski FL Remastered marks the arrival of the first skate-focused design. Equipped with all the performance features you would expect from a Stefan Janoski approved pro rider design, but enhanced further by the innovative futuristic material, the result is a finish that is more durable than conventional leather and yet uses less water and results in less fabric waste during the manufacturing process.

Continuing parent-brand Nike’s journey to zero carbon and zero waste, Nike’s Move to Zero campaign is one that remains firmly rooted in a commitment to sustainability and environmental activism. Born from a desire to ‘protect the future of sport against climate change’, Nike SB follows in the footsteps of Nike to focus on an aim to reduce its carbon emissions by 30% by 2030 and to divert 99% of all footwear manufacturing waste away from landfills. The inventive use of Nike Grind, recycled polyester and foam scraps helps honour the brand’s loyalty to both performance and premium-grade manufacturing methods.
